  10. No, I haven't seen that one.  There are other books, however, which 
  11. are startling in their depth.  And there's still OTHERS that 
  12. reflect the fractured, disjointed personality so often following 
  13. a member's "Exodus."

  19. Yes, and what about those multi-level marketing organizations.
  20. Some of 'em can get pretty weird, if you know what I mean.

  26. It's been my experience with the multi-level marketers 
  27. (especially a certain HUGE one which shall go nameless) that lends
  28. to my seeing them as a systematic, near RELIGIOUS body of
  29. salesman. Their manner and execution, from the image of
  30. cleanliness to the ultra-structured use of "catch-words" and
  31. "intra-jargon," reeks of a quasi-religious sect.

  33. Bizarre in some ways; this mesh of Mammon and ceremony...

  39. So what's the strongest cult today?

  43. THOMES:

  45. Without doubt, the most powerfully destructive cult on the planet 
  46. would have to be "The Watchtower Bible and Tract Society," or 
  47. "JEHOVAH'S WITNESSES."
  48.  
  49. You may ask why I'm of this belief.  I'd first like to point out 
  50. that I've found very LITTLE on this BBS concerning the "JW's": 
  51. Powerful indeed.
  52.  
  53. Second, I challenge ANY to offer evidence of a more structured, 
  54. efficient, and deadly religious mechanism than the Witnesses. 
  55. Under guise of "normalcy," their deeds are every bit as noxious 
  56. as, say, a macrocosm "Jim Jones" organization.  For while they 
  57. pluck and dine upon minds, they do so with absolute cunning and 
  58. seeming normalcy.  They steal and absorb lives as violently as an 
  59. Krishna or Unification group, but with a sweetness and 
  60. acceptability like no other force.

  62. I realize most cults use similar tactics in their trapping of the 
  63. "disinherited," but none are as surgically satisfying as 
  64. Jehovah's Witnesses.
  65.  
  66. I'd love to answer questions about them to any who'd like 
  67. discussion.  I'd very much like to see them "explored" here.

  73. I hear they're led by a group in Brooklyn, New York.  Is this true?

  79. Yes, the "Organization" in Brooklyn is considered the "MOTHER" of 
  80. them all.  Literally.  The Governing Body resides there, basking
  81. in the reverence of Witnesses worldwide.

  83. The Governing Body is composed of those who'll ascend to Heaven
  84. at death or Armageddon (as you know, Witnesses believe only
  85. 144,000 can or will go to heaven---the rest will populate a
  86. "Paradise Earth").

  92. So what happens to some of the people taken into this Organization?

  98. In a positive sense, they become better than what they were.  I
  99. mean, let's face it:  Jehovah's Witnesses are very, very correct in
  100. many ways about their teaching.  Their research and
  101. understanding of the bible is second only to the PhD's in
  102. Theology (I'm totally serious, here).

  104. Also, in a pure Christian sense, their execution is very similar to
  105. the earliest congregations, before the Roman Catholic sects began.
  106.  
  107. BUT...
  108.  
  109. Distorted by hungry, possessive MEN, the clan has become far
  110. more than a society of biblical purists.

  112. Ah, so MANY stories.  Like the incineration of various family
  113. and love relationships at the hands of the "Organization" (of
  114. which I TOO was victim!).
  115.  
  116. Like the complete discorporation of dreams and ambition. Like the 
  117. absolute refinement of drive and will to something more "pliable" 
  118. and "receptive."  Ask and ye shall be told ALL the stories, for 
  119. there are MANY!

  125. So how did you break free?

  129. THOMES:
  130.  
  131. Actually, they never QUITE had me "under-control," though they 
  132. possessed TREMENDOUS power over many around me.  Always in
  133. groups of the "JW" breed, there will be "dissenters," and I guess, in
  134. some ways, I was one.
  135.  
  136. I was constantly questioning some of their more "bizarre" 
  137. philosophies, but held an unshakable belief in what I was doing.  
  138.  
  139. As far as techniques, the first rule of Cultdom is "SHOWER THEM
  140. WITH LOVE." You are made right at home, bathed in good tidings
  141. and a general "peace."  Suddenly, everything seems OK.
  142.  
  143. It's here that you're either hooked for further Mind-Bending, or 
  144. you turn and hit it.
  145.  
  146. I say this because cults (in general) prey on the DISINHERITED.  
  147. They hungrily feed on those who've nothing to live for, who've 
  148. lead a broken and shattered life.
  149.  
  150. They snatch-up the unwary, wandering souls, offering salve for 
  151. their plight.  And let me tell you---at the time, I WAS that 
  152. confused sorta guy.
  153.  
  154. Next, if you "submit" to further exposure, you will be gradually 
  155. tugged inward. They reveal themselves and their teachings much 
  156. like one would peel a grape.
  157.  
  158. Slowly you learn ALL about them, but it's slow only in THEIR 
  159. terms.  I say THIS because their most formidable weapon at this 
  160. point is BOMBARDMENT:  They DROWN prospective members in new 
  161. information.  So much "new truth"!  And the brain of the "new 
  162. one" frantically tries to process it all.  Before they can 
  163. analyze one piece of info, they're there with more delicious 
  164. servings.

  166. And more.  And more.

  168. Of course, the person NEVER suspects what's happening, and indeed 
  169. most of the members THEMSELVES don't realize the psychological 
  170. import of what they do---they're simply teaching the "truth" in 
  171. accord with the "vision."

  179. I hear their mid-week meetings are incredibly intense.  Isn't this
  180. where they learn how to "Preach and Teach" i.e. Convert?

  186. Man, you said it!  Did you know that an outside study was done
  187. on their "Teaching and Preaching" school (called Theocratic
  188. Ministry School)?  It's been discovered that a four year
  189. incorporation into the school (once a week, every week of the
  190. year) is the equal of three years of formalized college study?
  191.  
  192. But that's not all:  The college study COVERED in those three
  193. years is equal parts Sales, Debate and Theology!  Nearly three
  194. degrees in one!

  196. But the scary part?  MOST WITNESSES HAVE BEEN IN THE
  197. SCHOOL FROM DAY ONE, EIGHT O'CLOCK!  Imagine the polish
  198. on those Bad Oscars!

  204. Are these people EVIL?

  210. Nah.  In all fairness, the PEOPLE of these groups are usually 100% 
  211. SINCERE in their devotion and beliefs in whatever doctrine.  They 
  212. pursue vigorously their total alignment to the cult's "creed."

  214. Almost none are intentional "brain thieves," and in the case of 
  215. the Witnesses, the actual "leaders" (Governing Body, Brooklyn) 
  216. are not seen as ultimate law and structure, rather, they're seen 
  217. as men (ONLY men!) who get instruction from God (not by 
  218. "revelation," mind you, but by "unseen influence").

  220. This body has UNBELIEVABLE power over the 7 million Witnesses 
  221. worldwide. Literally, they can change 7 million lives with ONE 
  222. SENTENCE of their "organ," the Watchtower Magazine.

  224. Which brings me to my previous assertion that the Witness are the 
  225. MOST powerful cult on earth.  Not in terms of numbers, and NOT in 
  226. terms of political/financial spread (FEW Witnesses have $$$, and 
  227. NONE have Political Office of ANY kind!).

  229. No, it's THE DEGREE OF ABSOLUTE, WILLING, UNHINDERED, AND
  230. ULTRA-ORGANIZED DEVOTION THE ORGANIZATION GARNERS
  231. FROM ITS MEMBERS.  Without braided pony-tails, pagan dances,
  232. and bonfires, the Witness carry-out the most bizarre of mental
  233. rituals.

  235. God, it's difficult to EXPLAIN in WORDS!  I could go on for 
  236. WEEKS!  It's such an exhausting and EXTENSIVE subject!  You can 
  237. see I'm biting-off gigantic chunks here!  But keep up the 
  238. questions!
